# Introducing Content Defined Chunking (CDC)

Content Defined Chunking (CDC) improves backup efficiency by detecting and saving duplicate data chunks. It uses SHA-256 hashes to identify and store only unique file pieces. This method reduces redundant storage in backup programs like restic.
