Prove a PostgreSQL backup restores data and sequences

A readable PostgreSQL dump listing is not proof of a successful restore. Rows, sequence state and application use need a separate disposable destination.

This runbook combines custom-format archive inspection, an isolated restore, a sequence-continuation control and environment diagnostics. Its supplied test was actually executed against PostgreSQL 16 with Unicode data and a bigserial primary key.

Unlock the complete procedure and acceptance worksheet. It covers logical custom-format backups, not physical base backups or point-in-time recovery. It assumes an operator authorized to create a disposable database; never aim the commands at production. Verified 18 October 2026. #PostgreSQL #RestoreTesting
