A newly created Northern Illinois Transit Authority (NITA) board convened this week for its inaugural meeting, marking a major milestone for the region’s transit future. Created through landmark state legislation passed less than a year ago, NITA now oversees regional transit and will receive $1.5 billion annually to strengthen, modernize, and expand service across northern Illinois. Active Transportation Alliance helped lead the coalition of riders and advocates that pushed for the legislation. The NITA Act establishes a new governance structure designed to put riders and communities first.
