Chicago: take a neighborhood walk with a local

Created: Last edited:
Chicago Greeter offers free visits led by local volunteers. Personalized neighborhood visits typically last two to four hours and can accommodate up to six guests; request one through the program's reservation page.

For something shorter, its InstaGreeter program offers free hour-long downtown walks without advance registration. Check the current schedule and meeting point before setting out. Self-guided neighborhood routes are also available, including Bronzeville, Pullman, Pilsen and West Ridge.

Know a neighborhood well and enjoy explaining it? The program also welcomes volunteer Greeters. Its site says prior experience is not necessary. That is one concrete way to turn local knowledge into a useful welcome.

Visits, walk schedules, self-guided routes and volunteering.
