Guatemaltecos in Chicago: History and Heritage

Created: Last edited:
Guatemaltecos have lived in Chicago for over a century, with growth starting in the 1980s due to the Guatemalan Civil War. There are at least 18,800 Guatemaltecos in the Chicago metro area. The community includes speakers of Maya languages like Akateko and Q’eq’chi, preserved through the Chicago History Museum's Indigenous Language Maintenance Project.
