The new design from Olaoluwa Osuntokun explores pooling balances into one output while preserving each user's ability to exit independently. Making Bitcoin cheaper to use without handing everyone's keys to a custodian is exactly the problem worth working on.
Big caveat: this doesn't run on Bitcoin today. It needs proposed opcodes to activate, joining requires operator approval, and mass exits still face throughput limits. Interesting research, with a public specification and reference implementation to scrutinize.
